Review: Thursday by The Weeknd

By Imaan Ali ’27

The Weeknd warns her, but she’s stubborn. He doesn’t want her to get hurt. He just sees himself as any other boy trying to hook up. He fails to convince her. She is high off of ecstacy. She has already got her mind stuck to him. She ends up getting heartbroken in the end as she refuses to listen to him.

The Birds Pt.1 is hands down the best song The Weeknd (otherwise known as Abel) has ever released. With a beat and lyrics that fit well together, the song has a perfect ratio of a good beat and a good lyrical background. The story behind this song has to do with the Weeknd talking to his girl and telling her to not fall in love with him because he will just leave her. But his girl doesn’t listen and he does not want to be the one held accountable for breaking her heart. While hooking up, he also tells her that because she is on drugs she doesn’t know what she wants, because she isn’t sober. He explains in this song that he’s just another guy trying to hook up but not stay for long, hence the lyric: “I’m just another bird”.

117.1 million monthly listeners and 5 albums. With the album being 50 minutes long and having 9 songs in it, the album Thursday was made by the Weeknd. The Weeknd’s music genre goes all around, with R & B with a mixture of Pop, and sometimes he even includes rRap in his music as well.

“Thursday” (a song with the same name as the album), revolves around how the Weeknd, as we know as a player, only wants the girl “Thursday” on the day Thursday. The Weeknd has a tight schedule, with a different girl each day of the week. Abel tries to tell this girl to wait in line because apparently it’s only Wednesday, coming from the lyric: “But it’s not Thursday, baby why are you calling?”

“The Morning”, a fan favorite, so you will probably like it as well. The song talks about drugs, sex and money(who would’ve guessed it), as Abel talks about how he got with this stripper, who has the same motive as him:money. The stripper is referred to as a type of girl you won’t see in the morning. He talks about his morning after and how he had cereal and alcohol for breakfast; saying later in the song that the higher he gets of drugs the harder he will come down.

You can listen to these songs on repeat. Even though critics haven’t rated this album that highly, I’m here to tell you that this album is so good you won’t get bored with it.
