Freshmen Assembly Surprises with Awards

By Kathryn Powell ’28

On Friday, February 16th, 2024, the freshman class at ELHS was called down for an assembly. The assembly started off routine as usual, with guidance counselors and administrators such as Mrs. Blain and Mrs. Matroni going over the scheduling requirements and information with the students.

However, halfway through the assembly, students were surprised with a mid-year awards ceremony to celebrate progress, excellence, and the overall embodiment of ELHS’s standards.

Many different types of awards given out at this ceremony, the most coveted kind being Excellence Awards. Given to students who are truly excelling in school and putting their best foot forward, achieving things such as honor roll status, perfect attendance, and/or having zero tardies.

Excellence Awards weren’t the only awards given out. Knowing just how hard the transition and adjustment period from middle to high school can be, guidance and administration also gave out Above and Beyond Awards. Recipients of Above and Beyond awards were recognized by individual educators, and they were based on the students being engaged in class, helping others, participating in class activities, and overall being a good and mature person.

Progress awards were also given out to recipients who might be having a harder time adjusting to high school, but are showing lots of potential and making lots of academic and social progress in their high school journey.

A second assembly for the Class of 2027 scheduled for the end of the school year is in the works. While multiple types of awards for students will be given out, the administrators at ELHS have one more surprise up their sleeves: recognizing educators who have gone above and beyond this school year to truly help the Class of 2027 learn, grow, and have fun this year.
