Sophomore Civics Project Leads to Late Bus

For their sophomore civics project last year, Daniel Nkalubo and Oluwafunmilayo Coates developed a plan for the late bus for students that students had trouble finding rides after school. The plan, which the ELPS has now implemented, started as their civics project.

“We were sophomores, right? And we couldn’t drive around,” Daniel said. “We wanted to have some sort of transportation because we knew people who are in similar situations also wanted to stay after for programs for extra help.”

Their original intention was to plan for transportation for athletes and other kids who wanted or needed to stay after school.

“It didn’t end up being very effective for sports because the time that we chose for the Late Bus they changed it for better routage,” Funmi said, “but it’s only effective for out-of-school education”

The program has since evolved and been tweaked to become an easier option for the students who stay after school.

“The last time I took it, it took me like less than 15 minutes to get home,” Daniel stated..

The Late Bus has improved over time and now drops the high schoolers off and then picks up and drops off the middle schoolers.

“It’s very accessible,” said Daniel, “it’s very easy.”
