1 in a 11: Hampden DA Gives Presentation on Dating Violence to ELHS Students

Physical, mental, emotional, and sexual are the types of abuse found in dating relationships, according to the Hampden County District Attorney’s presentation on dating violence here at ELHS.

Focused on the case of Kathryn Mauke, a student at SABIS who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend Nikolas Lacrosse, the presentation consisted of a short movie of Mauke and her death and a short talk.

While the presentation wasn’t required, many ELHS students chose to attend. The mood of the room was lugubrious, though everyone was clearly engaged, quiet and respectful.

“I didn’t make this presentation mandatory in case anyone had prior issues,” said Principal Mr. Frank Paige, “but I do think that it’s a very important topic.”

Of every 11 female high school students, one has reported experiencing physical dating violence.

“We just started showing this,” said the man from the Hampden District Court, “and we’ve already shown it to nearly 4,000 students.”

A light of awareness is being shed on dating violence, and more resources such as the many hotlines that are available are being shared more.

“I’m glad they are highlighting the importance of hotlines.” Said Manny Garcia

All the students who were present seemed genuinely interested and touched by the presentation.

“I’m happy I decided to go to the presentation,” said Andrew Preye. “The story was touching, and I feel I’ve learned a lot.”
